Freedom of Stanley
On 8th Dec 1976 the Royal Marines were granted the Honorary Freedom of Stanley in recognition of the close association of the Corps with the Falkland Islands for two centuries. This was on the Motion of then Councillor and ex Royal Marine, John Smith. The Historic Dockyard Museum hosted a special reception to mark the occasion on 4th December 2016. The Museum was presented with a framed map retrieved from Argentine Special Forces in 1982 and a Royal Marine Association plaque. John Smith, who was guest of honour, was also presented with a plaque.
