Yes. The Council funded the purchase of ten Spitfires for the Royal Air Force in 1940, as the Battle of Britain was using up the Air Force's aircraft. Money for another Spitfire was raised by a local association, by asking its members to subscribe one penny for every enemy plane shot down.
