We are always looking for ideas for temporary displays or special exhibitions. If you are aware of an interesting anniversary or have a subject that you would like to see turned into an exhibition - don't be shy, contact the Museum on 27428 or e-mail Leona Roberts at museum.manager@horizon.co.fk
On 28th September 1966 an Aerolineas Argentinas DC4 made a forced landing at Stanley racecourse after being hijacked by 28 extremists who intended to carry out a symbolic invasion of the Islands. Four Royal Marines and a number of civilians were taken hostage and held onboard the aircraft along with 26 passengers. The Falkland Islands Defence Force were immediately called out, with the 30 active members reinforced by retired members and civilian contractors. Although hostages were released late on the first day, the siege continued until just before dark on the second. After their surrender, the 27 men and one woman were held in the annexe of St. Mary's Church until they were taken away on the Argentine ship "Bahia Buen Suceso" on 1st October. The aircraft was flown back to Argentina a week later.
The display will be held in the Museum in late September. While we do have some photographs and records of this fascinating event, any information, recollections, images or items would be most welcome. All items can be returned if required. |

100th Anniversary of the Telephone Exchange
The first Telephone Exchange was officially opened in Stanley on 21st September 1906. While there is little information about this event in itself, the Museum is taking this opportunity to look at the development of telephone communication in the Islands over the last century.
Any photographs of telephone systems, switchboard operators, buildings and so on are most welcome, as are stories and memories of the way things were! |

25th Anniversary of the Conflict
We are working on plans for a special exhibition commemorating the events of 1982. No date has been set for this, but it is hoped that it will take place around the anniversary of the Liberation.
The Museum is very limited in the way of original material - photographs, objects etc - from 1982 and we are trying to gather more for this display and for our records in general.
Please - if you have anything that you are willing to share during this special year, contact the Museum. Photographs, letters and other printed material can be scanned and returned to you very quickly; items can be returned after display. If you have any ideas about this exhibition, please contact the Museum. |

Early Stanley / Living in the Falklands We are gradually building up a collection of photographs showing Stanley in the early days of its development and are planning an exhibition along these lines next winter (2007). We are also gathering photographs demonstrating the way Islanders lived and worked in the past - this will include everything from carting peat and fishing, to the vehicles used, picnics, clothes/fashion, dances and events. While old photographs are, of course, more than welcome, we are also looking for more recent images for these displays. As always, originals can be scanned and returned. |
