Falkland Islands

In June 2005 the Museum presented its "Year of the Sea Exhibition" - a SeaBritain 2005 event. The aims of SeaBritain 2005 (organised primarily by Greenwich National Maritime Museum in conjunction with more than 80 other large UK organisations) were twofold: firstly to encourage an appreciation of the sea and secondly to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson.

The FIMNT felt that these aims were equally relevant to Falkland Islanders, and planned a series of events to draw attention to our maritime heritage and the vital role that the sea plays in the lives of Islanders.

The Exhibition aimed to cover all aspects of how the sea has affected life in the Falklands, past and present - ranging from leisure, to local shipping, to industry. Of the 300 or so photographs that were on display, up to 70% had not been previously displayed - the Museum has a very limited amount of space! - and many were loaned specifically for the exhibition.

More than 200 attended over the two days, much to the delight of Museum staff who had not been sure what to expect in terms of attendance, but had never hoped for so much support.

It was fantastic to hear everyone exchanging memories and stories as they looked around, and to listen to the very fond way in which Islanders remember vessels like the "Darwin".

The Museum would like to thank the many individuals who loaned items for the exhibition - it was this generosity that made the event such a success. Particular thanks were extended to art teacher Tim Simpson and all her students for producing such a terrific display of artwork - the youngsters' interpretation of "the Falklands and the sea" was fascinating and created quite a stir.
