The
Falkland Islands have a fascinating maritime history, primarily because
of the Islands’ location - close one of the great trading routes of
the world, around Cape Horn.
The
Horn provided an essential route between the Pacific and Atlantic
oceans prior to the building of the Panama Canal in 1914. The Falkland
Islands were an important supply point for vessels making the journey
around the Horn and the ship repair sector was, for some time, a lucrative
business.
More
than 100 wrecks are known to lie off the rocky coasts of the Islands
and we will feature many of them on this page, so keep looking.
