A Dutch expedition commanded by Jacob Mahu left for the South Seas in 1598.  After the expedition passed through the Straits of Magellan the Geloof, captained by Sebald de Weert, turned back into the Atlantic. On 24^th January 1600 three small Islands were sighted and named the Sebald de Weert Islands, today identified as the Jason Islands.
