After Spanish protests at the French occupation of the Islands, Bougainville agreed, in October 1766, to surrender his interests in the Islands to the Spanish government, in return for a payment of the equivalent of twenty five thousand pounds. Two Spanish frigates, the Esmeralda and the Liebre, left for the Islands and arrived in the Falklands in March of 1767.
