Captain McBride returned to England, leaving Captain Rayner as commander of Port Egmont, who was soon replaced by Captain Hunt of the Tamar.  In September 1769 Hunt, cruising in the Tamar, saw a Spanish schooner from Port Soledad.  Hunt presented the master with a formal warning to leave the Islands.  A few days later a second meeting took place where Hunt was presented with papers from the Spanish ordering the British to leave the Islands.  A standoff resulted.
