After the British return to England, a ‘conditional restitution’ was agreed on between the Spanish and British in January 1771. This comprised a complicated document that allowed both parties to remain in the Islands, while they both claimed the same archipelago. Port Egmont was restored to the British, as were the munitions confiscated by the Spanish. The British sent three ships to the Islands to re-establish a presence at Port Egmont. |
