In an attempt to destabilise the Spanish colonies in South America, Britain invaded and captured Buenos Aires in 1806.  This led to the Spanish Governor in the Falklands leaving for the coast.  The Falkland Islands were now completely uninhabited, save for occasional passing sealers and whalers who used the Islands for water and supplies.
