With the swearing in of Vernet as Governor of the Falkland Islands in 1828, the British Ambassador in Buenos Aires was instructed to forward the British claim to the Islands, which he duly did. However, no settlement was forthcoming. So in 1832, the Clio and Tyne were despatched to take the Islands back under British possession. The Clio arrived in Port Egmont in December 1832, where they found the settlement in ruins. The British immediately attempted to re-build the blockhouse, Fort George. |
