Under Governor Allardyce, Stanley developed considerably, his public works establishing wireless communication between East and West Falkland in 1913, the colony’s first hospital, opened in May 1915, and the very grand town hall in 1916. The town hall building housed not only an assembly point, but also a library, museum and the court chambers. The building was the pride of the Falkland Islands colony, and it was a great loss when it burnt down in 1944. |
