Lord Chalfont, the British Minister for State arrived in the Islands in November 1968, visiting both East and West Falkland. He told the Islanders that whilst they might not wish for change, their children might. The Islanders were horrified at this news, and demonstrations took place in Stanley when Lord Chalfont arrived. The Islanders were British, and wanted to stay that way. Chalfont engaged executive council in discussion as to how the Falklands should be handled. It was a secret meeting, but information was leaked to the effect that the British Government was to set about a course of events that would eventually see the Falklands ceded to Argentina. |
