After the installation of a military government in Argentina in 1976 relations between the British and Argentine Governments over the Falklands worsened. Initially occupying South Georgia, Argentine troops landed in Stanley on the 2 April 1982, and set about occupying the town, and then the rest of the archipelago. The next day, a United Nations approved resolution called for Argentina to withdraw for negotiations on the future of the Falkland Islands. Also on 3 April, a House of Commons debate approved support for the recapture of the Islands. The British task force left for the Islands on the 5 April. |
