1765 January British land at Saunders Island and claim Islands
1766 January British establish settlement of Port Egmont on Saunders Island
1766 October French transfer Pt. Louis to Spanish Gov't. Renamed Port Soledad
1767 April French Colony formally handed over to the Spanish
1769 September British and Spanish meet. Hostility ensues.
1770 June The Spanish arrive in Port Egmont, and out-numbering the British, order them out
1771 After an initial British surrender an agreement is signed and both British and Spanish remain in the Islands
1774 May British leave Port Egmont. Settlement abandoned.
1806 War in Buenos Aires. Spanish governor flees and Islands abandoned
1820 November Representatives of the new United Provinces sent to take possession.
1823 Argentine Governor, Don Pablo Arguati, appointed.
1825 Treaty of Amity, Trade and Navigation is signed by Britain and Buenos Aires.
1828 June Louis Vernet appointed Governor and granted rights to East Falkland.
1831 December United States vessel Lexington destroys Port Soledad settlement.
1832 September Temporary Spanish Governor appointed. Murdered by mutineers.

1833 January British remove Argentines and establish sovereignty in Port Louis.
1833 March The 'Beagle', with Charles Darwin on board, visits the Falklands.
1833 August The Port Louis Murders leave newly appointed governor Brisbane dead
1834 January Lieutenant Smith appointed Governor
1840 The Colonial lands and Emigration Commission propose the Islands be colonised.
1841 August Richard Moody appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Islands
1843 July Work began on a new town site that was to be named Stanley
1843 November Falklands officially receive charter for the Constitution of the Government.
1845 April Governor Moody forms the Executive Council
1845 July Stanley officially becomes the capital after the population of Port Louis relocates.
1846 First school established in Stanley
1849 October The Chelsea Pensioners arrive
1852 January The Falkland Islands Company is formed and granted a Royal Charter
1855 Military Guard and Volunteers established
