Sir Ian MacFadyen visit

The historic heart of Stanley
Sir Ian MacFadyen's recent visit to the Islands was a little different to the first time he visited following the 1982 Conflict. Sir Ian MacFadyen, who flew the first Phantom from the UK to the Falklands, had to refuel 35 times in the air on his way south! The Phantoms replaced the Harriers - which were available for air combat operations in the Falklands during the conflict.
The pictures shown are of Sir Ian arriving in the Islands for the first time and being met by General David Thorne. The Museum and National Trust have a Phantom cockpit in their collection - the Phantom that was for many years the Gate Guardian at Mount Pleasant.
